During the pandemic, everyone suddenly became very interested in what their cutting board was up to. The kitchen became the center of the universe, and soap-and-water loyalty reached an all-time high. But if you want to level up, you can also buy cooking tools that fight germs before you even say sanitize.
Enter Fab Slabs, an Australian company that makes cutting boards so naturally antibacterial they practically have a blacklist. Each board comes from a single slab of kiln-dried camphor laurel, a tree so common Down Under it’s basically a weed. It may not impress the landscape, but in the kitchen it’s a germ-fighting overachiever. The National Association of Testing Authorities tried repeatedly to grow E. coli and salmonella on these boards and got absolutely nowhere. Even boards that had been chopping for seven to ten years were still clean. Show-off.
Since the wood does the heavy lifting, you can skip the dramatic lemon-and-salt exfoliation. Just rinse with hot soapy water, dry it off, and massage in some grape-seed oil when it looks thirsty. If the past few years taught us anything, it’s that the stuff in our homes should pull their weight. Copper fixtures and trustworthy cookware are other ways to stop side-eyeing your surfaces. We’ll take all the peace of mind we can get.
