John Mayer has officially turned laundry into a personality trait. In his team-up with The Laundress, the singer-songwriter admitted that his favorite weekend plan involves a sink, some suds, and exactly zero shrinkage. “I look forward to [washing clothes],” he said on a Zoom call, presumably with a perfectly folded pile just out of frame. He even created his own detergent and fabric spray, Way Out West, inspired by his Montana place—because nothing says “rustic retreat” like hand-washed Sea Island cotton. But even a Grammy winner has laundry regrets. “It’s always when I’m drying things,” he confessed. “I call it a shrinker, not a dryer.”
Mayer’s anti-shrink routine is part spa day, part Pilates class. He fills a sink, tosses in the tees, drizzles detergent like he’s finishing a pasta dish, and gets everything sudsy with his actual hands. After a rinse, he lays each shirt on a towel, rolls it up tight, then kneels on it and wiggles side to side like he’s polishing the floor with his dignity. Finally, he hangs them to dry. It’s a workout, a meditation, and a subtle brag all in one.
The upside? His shirts basically get tenure. “People toss clothes because they think they’re finished,” he says. “But I’ve never seen a shirt quit because it was hand-washed too lovingly.” His dream: four perfect tees, one entire tour, zero tragic dryer incidents.
And because no laundry obsession is complete without scent-based emotional support, Mayer also spritzes pillowcases and hotel blankets with his fabric spray. Nothing says “I miss my washing machine” like making a Marriott bed smell like your Montana laundry room.
